How Long do Fillings last?

Dental composite fillings typically last 5 to 10 years on average. However, their lifespan depends on several factors:

  • Size & Location of the Filling: Smaller fillings in areas with less biting pressure often last longer than large fillings.

  • Oral Habits: Teeth grinding, nail biting, or chewing on ice/pens can wear them down more quickly.

  • Oral Hygiene: Good brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits help extend their life.

  • Diet: Frequent sugary or acidic foods/drinks can weaken fillings and surrounding tooth structure.

Heres what to watch out for:

  • Pain or Sensitivity
If a tooth with a filling starts to hurt or feels sensitive to hot, cold, or sweet foods, it could mean the filling is leaking, cracked, or that decay has formed underneath.

  • Visible Damage
You might see or feel a chip, crack, or rough edge on the filling. Even a small break can let bacteria in.

  • Discoloration Around the Filling
Dark spots or stains at the edges may signal decay under the filling.

  • Loose or Missing Filling
If it feels like the filling has shifted, or if part of it falls out, it needs replacement right away.

Food Getting Stuck
If food regularly catches around a filled tooth, the filling may have worn down or pulled away from the tooth structure.
