Post-Op Instructions: Dental Crown

Temporary Crown Care

Avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods (gum, caramel, hard candy, nuts) that may loosen or break the temporary crown.
✅ Chew on the opposite side of your mouth when possible until the permanent crown is placed.
✅ If the temporary crown comes off, it is NOT an emergency. Call our office so we can replace it.  Keep it in a safe container and bring it with you.

Eating & Drinking

  • Wait until numbness completely wears off before eating to avoid biting your cheek, lip, or tongue.
  • Soft foods are best for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid very hot or cold foods if the tooth feels sensitive.

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush gently but thoroughly around the crown area.
  • Floss carefully: slide floss out from the side rather than pulling straight up to avoid dislodging the temporary crown.
  • Continue daily brushing and flossing as normal to keep the area clean.

What to Expect

  • Mild soreness in the gums around the tooth for a few days.
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure—this is normal and should gradually improve.
  • A slight difference in bite at first—this usually settles as the crown adjusts.
  • Proper oral hygiene is critical to the longevity of your new crown. Brush and floss regularly. The tooth can still decay under the crown without proper home care.

Pain & Medications

  • Mild discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers (ibuprofen or acetaminophen, unless otherwise directed).
  • If prescribed medication, take exactly as directed.
