This is not usually a dental emergency. Call our dentistry office so we can schedule a replacement. Keep the crown in a safe container and bring it with you to your appointment.
Eating & Drinking After Dental Procedures
-
- Wait until numbness completely wears off before eating to avoid biting your cheek, lip, or tongue.
- Soft foods are best for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid very hot or cold foods if the tooth feels sensitive.
These precautions help protect your temporary restoration and support healing.
Oral Hygiene with a Temporary Crown
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is critical after dental procedures involving crowns.
-
- Brush gently but thoroughly around the crown area.
- When flossing, slide the floss out from the side rather than pulling straight up to prevent dislodging the temporary crown.
- Continue daily brushing and flossing to keep the area clean and healthy.
Proper home care is essential in dentistry because teeth can still decay underneath a crown if plaque and bacteria are not removed regularly.
What to Expect
-
- Mild soreness in the gums around the tooth for a few days.
- Sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure—this is normal and should gradually improve.
- Proper oral hygiene is critical to the longevity of your new crown. Brush and floss regularly. The tooth can still decay under the crown without proper home care.
If your bite feels uneven or uncomfortable after a few days, contact our office for an evaluation.
Pain Management & Medications
-
- Mild discomfort can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen (unless otherwise directed).
- If prescribed medication, take exactly as directed.
