Post-Op Instructions: Dental Implant Placement

Thank you for choosing Lowcountry Family Dentistry for your dental implant procedure. Dental implants are a reliable, long-term solution in modern dentistry for replacing missing teeth. Following these post-op instructions dental implant guidelines will help protect your implant, reduce complications, and promote proper healing.

First 24 Hours

Bleeding
Mild oozing is normal after dental implant surgery. Bite gently on gauze for 30–45 minutes and replace as needed. If bleeding continues, lightly moisten a tea bag and bite down for 30 minutes to help control it.

Swelling

Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek near the implant site for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off during the first 6–8 hours. Swelling typically peaks around 48 hours and then gradually improves.

Rest

Avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours. Keep your head slightly elevated while resting to minimize swelling and bleeding.

Protect the Implant Site
Do not touch the surgical area with your fingers or tongue. Avoid disturbing the site to support proper clot formation and healing.

Eating & Drinking After Dental Implant Surgery

For the first few days:

    • Choose soft, cool foods such as yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, eggs, and soup
    • Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard foods
    • Do not use straws
    • Avoid smoking or spitting, as these can dislodge the blood clot and delay healing
    • Stay well hydrated with plenty of fluids

Following these dietary recommendations supports optimal healing after your dental implant procedure.

Oral Hygiene Guidelines

Proper oral care is essential after dental implant placement.

    • Do not brush directly on the implant site for the first 24 hours
    • After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in 8 ounces of warm water) 3–4 times daily, especially after meals
    • Continue brushing and flossing normally in other areas of your mouth

Maintaining good oral hygiene is key to long-term dental implant success in restorative dentistry.

Pain Management & Medications

    • Take prescribed pain medications or over-the-counter relievers as directed.
    • If antibiotics were prescribed, take the full course even if you feel better.
    • Mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising are normal and will improve over several days.

If you have questions about your medications, contact Lowcountry Family Dentistry for guidance.

Healing Expectations

    • Mild gum tenderness, light bleeding, and minor bruising may occur
    • Sutures (if placed) may dissolve on their own or be removed at your follow-up visit
    • The dental implant requires approximately 3 months to fuse with the jawbone (a process called osseointegration) before a crown or denture can be attached

Healing times may vary slightly depending on your individual case and overall oral health.
